Stressless Desktop with DaaS: Definition and Features
DaaS stands for Desktop-as-a-Service, a cloud-based service in which virtual desktops and applications are streamed over a network to connected devices. The users can access their virtual desktop via client software or a web browser, regardless of time and location. The simplified DaaS definition could be understood as a desktop on demand solution. The cloud provider hosts virtual desktops and makes them available as required.
The major difference to the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI): Desktop-as-a-Service is a cloud computing service where a third party manages the entire backend infrastructure. The operation of IT infrastructure and servers is done by the cloud provider and not by the internal IT department. With VDI, the company provides virtual desktops via its own datacentres. Stressless desktop with DaaS is based on a different principle: here, external providers take over the operation of the entire IT infrastructure as well as monitoring and support. The relevant desktop operating systems are run in virtual machines on the server of the cloud provider. All necessary storage and network resources are also located in the cloud. The actually desktop exists in the cloud and is streamed to the end devices – hence the name of this IT service. The DaaS can function both via a private and a public cloud. Note: In contrast to locally installed desktops, the data is not stored on the connected end devices, they remain on the DaaS server.
